Sauna vs steam room vs infrared: which one should you buy?

They look similar in a brochure and feel nothing alike. The difference is how the heat reaches you, and that changes who each one suits.

Traditional sauna: hot, dry, social

The Finnish original. A stove heats the air and a bed of stones to somewhere between 70°C and 100°C at low humidity, and you throw water on the stones for a burst of steam — löyly — that briefly spikes the perceived heat. Sessions are short and intense, usually broken into rounds with a cool-down between.

It suits people who want the classic ritual and have outdoor space. Our cedar barrel sauna uses a curved interior to distribute heat evenly, and the wood-fired Finnish sauna needs no electricity at all — a real advantage on a smallholding or during load-shedding.

Steam room: gentler air, total humidity

A steam generator saturates a sealed room to near 100% humidity at a much lower air temperature. It feels intense because you cannot evaporate sweat, but the air itself is nowhere near sauna heat, which many people find easier on the chest and sinuses.

Steam needs a properly sealed, waterproofed enclosure — this is the one option with real building implications. Our compact steam room is self-contained with the generator built in, and the luxury steam enclosure is a specified installation with six outlets and aromatherapy infusion. At the other end, the portable steam cabin at R12 500 sets up in five minutes on a normal plug and folds flat afterwards — by far the cheapest way to find out whether you like steam at all.

Infrared: lower air temperature, longer sessions

Infrared panels heat your body directly rather than heating the air around it. That is why a cabin at 50°C can feel more effective than a sauna at 90°C, and why most people can comfortably stay in for thirty or forty minutes rather than ten.

It is the practical choice for indoor installation: no waterproofing, no drainage, and a standard 220 V plug. If you plan to use it daily, look for low-EMF certified panels, as on our infrared wellness cabin. The Himalayan salt sauna adds backlit salt panels to the same infrared principle.

So which one?

  • You want the traditional ritual and have garden space — traditional sauna, wood-fired if you can manage the fire.
  • You want something indoors with minimal building work — infrared cabin.
  • You find dry heat uncomfortable, or want it for sinuses — steam.
  • You want to try before committing serious money — the portable steam cabin.

A note on safety

Heat therapy places genuine load on the cardiovascular system. Do not use a sauna or steam room after drinking alcohol, stay hydrated, and get out when you have had enough rather than pushing through. If you are pregnant, have a heart condition or high blood pressure, or take medication that affects heat regulation, talk to your doctor before you start. Children should never use these unsupervised.
